Semester 1 Study Guide

BRING ALL books to class the week of 12-9-12. We'll review in class a bit. The review will be MOST EFFECTIVE if everyone spends time looking for quotes to support potential questions...be prepared to SHARE in class...do not just TAKE from your peers. Only students prepared to SHARE, will be able to participate in the review discussion.

YOU WILL be expected to USE your book and cite COW (quotations and page numbers from the book ... think active reading, page numbers being asked for on homework, etc.) to demonstrate understanding of the literature we read as well as demonstrate understanding of citations and the writing process.

Books Needed:
Tuesdays With Morrie
The Five People You Meet in Heaven
Maus I and Maus II
Brave New World

Literature Book (Short Stories)
Diaries (3)

Concepts to Know:
What is FOIL in literature? How is FOIL used in the stories we read?
Characterization: Dynamic, Static, Flat, and Round
Conflicts: Man vs Man, Man vs Self, Man vs Nature, Man vs Society
What does the Saint Augustine High School ESLR "Christian Gentleman" mean? How can characters we read this semester be examples of how to be a Christian Gentleman? Remember: one can learn from BOTH good and bad examples!

Themes to look for evidence in the stories:
Creating Your Own Culture, Fitting in and a Desire for Acceptance
The Power of literature to INFORM
The Power of Literature to ENTERTAIN
Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) said, "All men would be tyrants of they could". How do the stories we read support or refute this statement?
Are people a product of nature, nurture, or both?

Vocabulary Story Rewrite

For the vocabulary Story Rewrite, you must turn in the ORIGINAL STORY that has my comments on it along with your revision.

Your revision must expand your story to 1,000 to 1,200 words.

ALL 20 words in the vocabulary unit must be used correctly and MADE BOLD or HIGHLIGHTED.

You cannot change the topic of the vocabulary story, just expand upon the story you started.

Remember:
titles are in italics
prepositions DO NOT end sentences
proper punctuation for dialogue
one idea per paragraph
include a word count at the end of the page
OPTIONAL: INCLUDE a picture to illustrate your story...a picture you made...not one from the computer.
THIS IS A CREATIVE STORY...use your imagination!

You will also be asked to reflect on your writing this semester as part of this assignment.

Read all aspects of the rubric/reflection document. This assignment will NOT be accepted late. If you are so inclined, you may wish to turn it in early to make sure it is in on time.

The assignment is called 1213VocabRewrite and is found on the papers page of the Website.

Tuesday Topic ... Thesis Statements

Tuesday we'll discuss writing Thesis statements in class. Many of us need practice writing them...it will make our revision of paper #1 run smoothly if we look at a few key items!

We'll practice writing thesis statements in class.

We'll visit the Purdue OWL site.

All papers we write need thesis statements. It directs the writer to stay on focus and provides a "road map" for the reader!

The First Week of October

Today we reviewed Grammar Lessons thus far:
Active and Passive Voice of Verbs
Italics

AND Started ... Prepositions/Prepositional Phrases

We wrote down preposition rules:
1. Prepositional Phrases act as 1 part of speech (ADJ or ADV)
2. Do not end a sentence with a preposition as prepositions take objects...the formula for a prepositional phrase is

PREPOSITION + words + NOUN/PRONOUN = Prepositional Phrase

WHAT IS A FOIL?
Definition:
The term ‘foil’
refers to a literary device where the author creates a character whose primary purpose is to create a contrast to another character by laying emphasis or drawing attention to the latter’s traits and characteristics through the former’s obviously contradictory ones.

Often the foil is a recurring character that has a personality, or an opinion of things, that is different from another recurring character. This character can be the opposite of the character in many ways — or perhaps very, very, very similar, except for a crucial difference.

Many intentional foils are depicted as physical contrasts to the main character.

For example ....
Batman & the Joker
Lord Voldemort & Dumbledore
Macbeth and Banquo
Good Guy vs Bad Guy (archetype)

Enjoyable Books to read this summer...

If you have time...
Divergent by Veronica Roth

The book is the first installment of the series (three total I believe). The DYSTOPIA is set in Chicago after Lake Michigan has become a swamp. A coming-of-age theme runs through this fast paced adventure story...with a hint of romance thrown in to keep multiple audiences involved.

As I read other books, I'll share them with you here. Feel Free to leave a comment about titles you suggest as well so that your peers can take advantage of your recommendations!

Check out the International Reading Association Young Adult Choices BOOK LIST for titles you may enjoy ... a list of books teens select for teens!

Another interesting list of books comes from Accredited Online Colleges. They posted a list of THE 15 BEST NOVELS FORECASTING OUR FUTURE. These books include Clockwork Orange and Farenheit 451, books many 10th grade students enjoy reading on their own. Dystopian Novels are popular right now, why not check out novels that were written a while ago that talk of the FUTURE ... notice what has or has not come true! This year we will read Brave New World. The fictional world created 500 years after the Model T rolled off the assembly line actually has some eerie concepts in it ... there are concepts we can assume the author thought were far fetched ideas in the 1930s but have come true since the book was written.

Accredited Online Colleges published a list of 21 Classics That Make for Great Beach Reads. Check out the list if you are looking for something to read...THAT IS NOT REQUIRED. I have read To Kill a Mockingbird, The House on Mango Street, and Treasure Island from that list.

An interesting site I found this summer detailed how libraries took summer reading to a "new level" with reading contests, prizes, and social gatherings. Reading CAN be fun ... give it a chance! Read the article, 15 Libraries Taking Summer Reading to the Next Level to learn more!

Incoming 10Th Grade Summer Reading

All INCOMING 10th Grade Students are to complete ONE Summer Reading Assignment:
Read Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven
THEN
Complete the Summer Reading 20122013 document on the class website
.

There are TWO documents linked on the website...the discussion questions are for class discussion ... they will not be collected...they are a study guide once class begins. You are welcome to look at them but not required to complete them.

Visit Mitch Albom's Website for his complete BIO and information about other books he wrote. I am EXCITED to get the upcoming release, The Time Keeper in August!

WE WILL watch the MADE FOR TV Movies based on each book in class. They ARE DIFFERENT than the books.

Please contact me if you have any questions! renemacvay@yahoo.com

Writing Exam Week of March 19th

Your WRITING EXAM is worth 10% of your semester grade. It MUST be completed in class. If you need to leave early for an athletic event or miss a day due to illness, please make sure to write down the time you miss on your cover sheet and have the substitute record the lost time. When I return, we will make up the time.

WRITING EXAM MAKE UP TIMES:
FRIDAY MARCH 30TH AFTER SCHOOL TILL 2 PM
MONDAY APRIL 2ND ... BEFORE SCHOOL (7 AM) AFTER SCHOOL TILL 3 PM
WEDNESDAY APRIL 4TH ... BEFORE SCHOOL (7 AM)

The WRITING EXAM is your opportunity to read a current events article. You will be asked to respond to a prompt based on your active reading of the article. You will need to provide TEXTUAL EVIDENCE from the article in your response.

SUGGESTIONS:
1. Underline verbs in prompt. Make sure you complete all steps.
2. Prewrite/brainstorm...plan your response.
3. After you write your rough draft...take a bit of a break and read Frankenstein. Your edits will be better if you take a break and look at it with "fresh" eyes.

You have all week to complete the assignment. Do not waste your time...do not rush. A good timeline is:
Day One...read the prompt, look over the rubric to know what is expected of you to achieve a top grade, then active read the article ... prewrite/brainstorm if time
Day Two...prewrite...rough draft
Block Day...finish draft/revise/start final draft
Friday...final draft

How do you turn it in?
Staple in this order:
TOP...
Rubric
Prompt
final draft
rough draft
prewrite
article
