Block Days ... 9-19 and 9-20

Block Days we'll review Vocabulary Lesson 3 prior to the quiz on Friday. We'll discuss the literature stories from this week and the topic of FOIL in literature. We'll also discuss active and passive voice of verbs a bit more.

WHAT IS A FOIL?
Definition:
The term ‘foil’
refers to a literary device where the author creates a character whose primary purpose is to create a contrast to another character by laying emphasis or drawing attention to the latter’s traits and characteristics through the former’s obviously contradictory ones.

Often the foil is a recurring character that has a personality, or an opinion of things, that is different from another recurring character. This character can be the opposite of the character in many ways — or perhaps very, very, very similar, except for a crucial difference.

Many intentional foils are depicted as physical contrasts to the main character.

For example ....
Batman & the Joker
Lord Voldemort & Dumbledore
Macbeth and Banquo
Good Guy vs Bad Guy (archetype)

We'll take the summer reading test part two.

After the summer reading test students will have the opportunity to read from:

2. Maus
3. OPTIONAL Outside Reading book, if one has been approved by me (or get one approved)
