Retreat Days 11-30 and 12-1

Today we organized binders, completed vocabulary book page 154 (1-10) and 163 (1-10), then discussed Brave New World.

The vocabulary quiz for this Friday is being extended to next Friday 12-9-11. It will be over 13, 14 and 15.

Monday 12-12-11 Vocabulary Test will be 30 Multiple Choice Questions and 20 points of sentences (Based on Brave New World)

Friday this week the Holocaust Unit tests will be returned to those students that do not have them back.

Tuesday 11-29-11

Finals are approaching! Today we did our usual Monday routine and wrote down in our planner all assignments due the rest of the semester...as noted on LAST TUESDAY"S blog Post.

Reminded students that the final exam study guide was posted on the blog last Wednesday. There will be no IN CLASS REVIEW. Tutoring time before school I am available to answer any questions about the final.

Today in class:
We completed Vocabulary Book SYNONYMS Lesson 14 (Page 162 NUMBERS 1-10)
Students stood up and discussed their Outside Reading Book Selections
Block 2 was given back their Holocaust Test.

Final Exam Study Guide

The Final exam will contain ESSAY and Multiple Choice Questions. The ESSAY Questions will be derived from ALL literature from the semester:
Summer Reading, Literature Book, Survival in Auschwitz, In My Hands and Brave New World. The essays will deal with common themes and literary concepts.

Block Day is the Holocaust Unit test.

After the test...read Brave New World. By MONDAY 11-21-11 have read up to and including Chapter 5. Print out the study guide and bring to class.

Monday 11-14-11

Today in class we complete Vocabulary Book Pages 129 (1-10) and 134 (1-10) to review for the quiz Friday (lessons 11 and 12 multiple choice format)

We started to discuss the Men Primo Levi met in the lager that helped him survive.

We discussed Brave New World...the context that it was written in this era and it is SATIRE and Science Fiction...understanding context of history makes us "get" the satire and enjoy it...similar to Animal Farm...

Holocaust Unit Test BLOCK DAY

By Block Day...read Eva's diary...pay special attention to the difference in voice between male and female diary entries AS well as male and female voice in the memoirs.

Holocaust UNIT Test on Block Day (11/16 and 11/17)

The Holocaust UNIT Test will be essay/short answer. That's the only way for each block to have a test that is unique to their block ... over two days.

What to study?
1. Make sure you read the two memoirs (In My Hands and Survival in Auschwitz) and the two diary selections (Petr Ginz and Eva Ginzova). Note the difference in representation of the event between diary and memoir.

2. Go back through your group project, notes from World Cafe and study guide information
Visit the webiste for themes listed...that is where essay questions will be derived (Survival in Auschwitz) and (In My Hands).

3. Review the Holocaust Studies page of the webiste. Review groups involved, use of propaganda, Kristallnacht, and role of the USA.

If your score was low because you wrote using words from 9-10 and not just words on the word list OR used only 7 not 7 from each list (TRANSLATE...did not accurately read the directions)...there is a re-take chance...Tuesday 11-15-11 at 7:10 AM. Bring a pen, lined paper and your creativity!

Block Day 11-9 and 11-10

In class we discussed Propaganda, Antisemitism and the concept of Indoctrinating the Youth. Check out the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Propaganda Exhibit on your own to see more of what we are looking at in class. We discussed Book Burning and censorship. We related these topics to our next literature selection...Brave New World...written and published in the 1930s.

We read a selection from Salvaged Pages - a 14 year old boy named Klaus Langer. His diary entry about life after Kristallnacht (73 years ago today).

Homework: Due Monday 11-14-11
Read the diary of Petr Ginz. Pay attention to what his focus was on in Terezin Ghetto that helped him find a reason to survive. We'll discuss that as well as the people that Helped Primo Levi find the will/keep the will to survive while in Auschwitz.

Presidential Medal of Honor Speaker...


Chapman University in Orange will have Gerda Weissmann Klein speak...you read her story All But My Life last year with Mrs. Arnn.

Here's the announcement from Chapman:

November 8, 2011 at 7:00 PM, Film Screening of "One Survivor Remembers" followed by comments by Holocaust Survivor and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Gerda Weissmann Klein.

IF you can go to this FREE event...please take notes on her talk to the group and have someone from the Rogers Center at Chapman University sign your notes to show you were there. ALSO Take a picture with Mrs. Klein and share it with the class. You'll be given a few minutes in class to talk about the experience. Bonus points will be awarded on your Holocaust Unit Test.
