Today we turned in Maus I study Guide and discussed Wall Street Journal Article

We completed Vocabulary Lesson 2 quiz

After the quiz there was time to READ MAUS or work on Vocabulary Flash Cards (4).

Due Monday:
Flashcards (4) and Vocabulary Story 4-6

Block Days 9-27 and 9-28

Complete and Correct Vocabulary Lesson 3 Choosing the Right Word and Completing the Senetnces
BLOCK 2: 1-10 each lesson
Block 4: evens
Block 3: 11-20
Block 5: odds

Blocks 2 and 4 completed the discussion of The Little Rock Nine and tied in the idea of tone and mood with THE CATE PAPER they are writing

Blocks 2 and 4 had time to look through a Wall Street Journal article...look for a thesis statement and pick out tone and mood. Handout due Friday if not done in class.

Blocks 3 and 5 did the same

Homework:
Grammar Flip due each Wednesday at 8 PM

Friday 9-22 and Monday 9-25 and Tuesday 9-26

Friday 9-22 we had short classes due to a rally. we had time for the Vocabulary Quiz on lesson 2.Students turned in the Upfront WS regarding FAST FASHION before the quiz.

Monday 9-25 we Completed and Corrected Vocabulary Lesson 3 Synonyms and Antonyms

Then we discussed AUTHOR'S TONE ... how it can be POSITIVE, NEUTRAL, OR NEGATIVE
We discussed BIAS
We started to look into The Little Rock Nine article to figure out author's tone

At the end of class papers were returned.

Tuesday 9-26 we will complete and correct Vocabulary Book Pages 31 and 41 then have a peer editing workshop

Sorry for the delay ... 9-19 I left school early to get a flu shot and did not get a chance to post ...

Tuesday 9-19 we had a peer editing workshop for our rough drafts. Additional peer editing can take place during PEER TUTORING TIMES before school Mon-Thurs 7-7:30 in room 322

Monday OCTOBER 9th you will upload your final draft ... Tuesday Oct 10th you will turn in the rubric with all drafts and peer editing documents/writers workshop papers.

You can utilize Peer Tutors Mon-Thurs from 7:00-7:30 to look at continual revisions of drafts

Block Days 9-13 and 9-14

Summer Reading test will be given during BLOCK DAY.

After the test,ACTIVE  read (like Mortimer Adler would want you to active read) The Little Rock Nine in the Upfront Magazine. Active Read the ADDITIONAL ARTICLE and complete the questions on the back. Homework if not done in class.

IF DONE...start reading Chapter 1 of Maus I or working on your paper draft.

We began our writers workshop brainstorming ideas for our CATE paper.

Today we completed and corrected the rest of Vocabulary Lesson 1 - Completing the Sentences

We completed the PORTFOLIO TRANSFER

We discussed how to write a good English short answer/essay response...using FOOD ANALOGIES
1. Provide TEXTUAL EVIDENCE/Meat...COW to back up your thesis statements
2. Make sure the evidence is thorough...provide me with a main dish rather than an appetizer...not just one potato chip!
3. Provide quality meat...
4. Provide the menu item ... answer the question asked...do not deliver what was not ordered.

Blocks 2-3-4 watched the video about courage on 9-11 The Boatlift

All blocks watched a portion of the Ted K. interview with Morrie
Block 2: 12 minutes
Blocks 3 and 5: 5 minutes

While students worked on vocabulary I collected overdue supplies and did a binder check

We continued discussing/TAKING NOTES on the CHARACTERIZATION WORKSHEET

ONLY Block 4 discussed MORTIMER ADLER'S HOW TO MARK A BOOK

Blocks 3 and 5  completed Vocabulary ODDS rather than evens
 Blocks 3 and 5 need to discuss how MITCH and MORRIE are DYNAMIC ROUND characters

Tuesday 9-5-17

Welcome back after a long weekend!

Today we completed and corrected Vocabulary Lesson 1 SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS
While that was being done people were called up toturn in required elements:
  • Signed Syllabus
  • Scholastic $
  • Kleenex
  • Vocab/Grammar book (if not in class Friday)
  • Vocabulary Flash Cards 1-3

Tomorrow I will check for binder with paper and dividers

Today I explained class procedures - noticing the schedule on the board and assignments listed on board. We discussed long range assignments and budgeting time each night to work on them.

Note Takers Volunteered in Blocks 2 and 5 ... we will get volunteers in blocks 3 and 4 on block day

Today we accomplished:
  • Starting our "turning in papers routine" as we walk in the classroom ... before the bell rings
  • Discussed OUTSIDE READING BONUS ... reiterated that bonus work can only be done if ALL REQUIRED WORK IS COMPLETED ON TIME.
  • Collected subscription $, and labeled Vocabulary and Grammar books with our names on the WHITE SPINES
  • Registered for Grammar Flip website NOTE: USE SAINTS email and your CANVAS password so you always remember it ... and we can always remind one another what it is.

REMINDERS:
  • Flash Cards completed for Tuesday ... Tuesday we start Vocabulary and Tuesdays with Morrie
  • Binder organized and Kleenex for Tuesday ...
