HALLOWEEN ... and beyond

REMINDER: MASS day tomorrow...Block DAYS Tuesday and Wednesday this week (Wednesday is CLUB DAY during homeroom)

REMINDER: NO SHAVE NOVEMBER begins 11-3-16 ... students must be clean shaven for MASS 11-22 (or can wear spirit dress on Mondays in November). Proceeds support Hogar Infantil orphanage.

CLASS DETAILS:
In class we completed and corrected WC pages 632-634 EX 1 and 2 ALL and pages 649-650 EX 1 and 2 ALL

Papers were passed back as WC was being done at the start of the class.

We continued our MAUS/LETTERS discussion today:
1. ALLUSIONS MLK, JR made to historical figures/why
2. Connotation of "EXTREMIST"
3. MLKJr.'s rationale for advocating for NONVIOLENT PROTESTS
    TEXT-TO-WORLD connection (2016 and most recent past)
     TEXT-TO-TEXT connection (reminder of last week's discussion) with MAUS

We will have a Writers Workshop to brainstorm ideas/start a draft of the argumentative paper - LIBRARY CONTEST PAPER - if you could only save one book...what would it be...explain why...

It is TWO MONTHS till Christmas...we need to celebrate our success in QUARTER 1 and find ways to improve as Quarter 2 begins...

Today...
  • Block 1 completed and corrected the portion of Friday's quiz that was administered without a key for F/G/H.  Block 1 was given the new UPFRONT ... bring to class each day.
  • Blocks 3, 4, 5 and 6 completed and corrected VOCABULARY LESSON 9 SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS

We discussed PTSD Symptoms...and found evidence in MAUS where VLADEK/ANJA/MALA could have exhibited signs of PTSD.

We went over due dates for the quarter as posted on the board as well as on CANVAS

We completed and corrected Vocabulary 8 Synonyms and Antonyms

We discussed MAUS/Letters Connection:
Page 3 Paragraph 3 of letters used to connect...

What did Vladek do or tell about others doing during WWII that may or may not have been legal (perhaps as a form of resistance) ... in war we sometimes make choiceless choices to survive.

Block Day and Friday 10-5-6-7

Block Day:
We completed and corrected 1-7 on the PARTICIPLE WORKSHEET
As we wrote the sentences on the board we discussed the GRAMMAR CONCEPTS that arose

We discussed/took notes on  STORY OF AN HOUR ... tone, mood, setting,  key details, irony, and looked back at foreshadowing

FRIDAY - Completed and Corrected Vocabulary Lesson 5 Synonyms and Antonyms (did not get to due to short classes/Hall of Fame Rally)
Writer's Workshop...we discussed PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES (WC 519-520) and looked for how we used prepositions and prepositional phrases in VOCAB STORY 1-2-3. We made revisions to our story to make it less wordy or to avoid prepositions at the end of sentences.
