Friday 2-28-14

Today we will take Vocabulary TEST 7-9

After the test work on THREE TEXTUAL EXAMPLES (Act/Scene/Line) to support the following Essential Questions:

To what extent are the supernatural forces responsible for the actions of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?

Nature’s reaction to the events in the play is ironic. EVALUATE how nature mimics the actions of the characters...both moral and immoral.

Also due Monday...Vocab. Story Lessons 10-12 ... see earlier blog post (Monday 2-3-14) that lists ALL details for the THREE stories this semester.

Block Day

Today we completed a Vocabulary Review ... TEST 10-12 Friday
Blocks 2-4 completed Vocabulary Book Pages 105-106, Blocks 5 and 6 will complete a BINGO BONUS

WE discussed the essential question that we prepared for today: At the beginning of the play the witches say "Fair is foul, and foul is fair." What does this mean? Does this idea resonate throughout the play? If so, how?

Block 2 discussed character's fatal flaws ... Blocks 4-5-6 did that yesterday
Block 2 has resumes passed out ... Blocks 4-5-6 did yesterday (reminder...completing your resume and turning it in the week after your homeroom training is worth a 10% BONUS)

Blocks 4 and 6 also discussed the ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How does the play define "manhood"? What is it that makes one a "man" in Macbeth?

All classes did a close reading of an article from the January 13th UPFRONT MAGAZINE

We will start the day with a quick Vocabulary Review: page 109 Choosing the Right Meaning

We will start to discuss the Macbeth essential question: Macbeth is on trial for murder. You have been hired to defend him. What defense do you use...Not Guilty by reason of insanity or plead Guilty to a lesser charge? Make a decision and build your defense...use specific textual evidence. (We will use our THEMES and MOTIFS WS to assist in this discussion)

We will take a Vocabulary Quiz Lessons 8 (11-20) and 9

Block Days February 12/13

Today we completed/corrected Vocabulary Book pages 87 (odds) and pages 90 and 97 (all.

Then we discussed Macbeth Worksheets (Acts 1 and 2). WE focused on MOOD and ADDED a DISCUSSION OF TONE. TONE in literature is the ATTITUDE a writer has toward the subject about which they are writing. It is evident from diction.

After the Macbeth Quiz...

Act Three WS ... Irony section is Homework if not completed in class.

FRIDAY...Vocabulary Quiz Lessons 7 and 8 (1-10). Multiple choice like semester 1 ... 45 questions (synonyms, antonyms, definitions, and completing the sentences).

Today we completed/corrected Vocabulary Book pages 87/88 and 94/95 evens.

Then we discussed Macbeth Acts 1 and 2 Worksheets.

Reminder: Quiz tomorrow Acts 1-3...MC and Short Answer format

Macbeth discussion in Blocks 4-5-6 included the deaths Macbeth was responsible for and the role he played in the other deaths in the play. Block 2 will cover this tomorrow.

Vocabulary Stories were collected. We worked on and corrected page 95 Synonyms and Antonyms and page 89 Completing the sentences (evens).

Act 2 WS for Macbeth were passed out. Tomorrow we will go over ACT 1 and Act 2 WS.

February 6th

Today we discussed how the vocabulary quizzes were going to be divided. Next week ...ALL of lesson 7 and the FIRST 10 words from lesson 8. The following week words 11-20 from lesson 8 and ALL of lesson 9. This pattern will be continued for lessons 10-12 and 13-15.

We looked at TWO Super Bowl commercials by Coca Cola. Our viewing included an analysis of author's purpose and intended audience. We discussed with "evidence" to support our hypothesis.

Semester 2 Papers

****The week long English Writing Exam will be held the week of March 31st-April 4th. This is worth 10% of the Second Semester Grade.

1. A resume will be started in Homeroom and be due in class. Details will be posted here after I find out information from the counselors as to the day of the homeroom "training".

Resume training begins March 27th. All resumes are due by April 14th. BONUS of 10% if you turn in your resume the school week after your homeroom training!

2. A research based expository paper - will be worked on in March. Details will be posted here at the end of February. Each Tuesday in March we will have library time to research, work on drafts, get peer editing tips from peers, and get feedback from me. The more time is used wisely, the less that will have to be done at home. The Expository Paper will be due, uploaded to turnitin.com by Sunday March 30, 2104 (11:59 PM).

The Writing Exam will start Friday April 11th and continue through Holy Week. It is an in-class assessment of writing. The passage will be read at home. This is 10% of the course grade for this semester.

Today papers were returned and we organized binders.

ALL of 2013 Upfront Magazines and Vocabulary Quizzes were recycled.

ALL Literature, Grammar, and Writing was kept.

Papers were transitioned to PORTFOLIOS (put after 10th grade papers).

A new Upfront Magazine was passed out and Macbeth was discussed.
