the movie Unbroken comes out over the holidays. It is a wonderful story (I read the book...a bit violent ... but a story of the human will to survive). If you see the movie over the holidays, bring you ticket to me FRIDAY the first week of Semester 2...7:00 AM room 322 for a bonus opportunity.

Look at the website for information about the Writers Symposium. If you attend a workshop, print this blog and have your parents sign indicating approval ______________________________________________. Then bring your ticket and notes from the workshop/event/author speaking.

Take a picture at the event and bring that to me as well.

BONUS OPPORTUNITIES - ONGONING - WARWICKS

Attend an author event at Warwick's....

Get your parents to sign this post _________________________ acknowledging they approve of the author presentation/topic and have an employee sign it. Take a picture with the author and take notes while there.

Come see me BEFORE SCHOOL (7:15) the next day and discuss the event. Bring the paper and picture.

Any events attended between December 12th and the last day of May count as bonus for Semester 2.

INTERSESSION ASSIGNMENTS - AND BONUS OPPORTUNITIES

During Intersession, like Semester 1...and will continue through Semester 2, attending an author event at Warwicks (see August Blog Post) or completing a Stage of Life writing post each month will be a bonus. The January Stage of Life will be posted HERE the first day of Intersession.


REQUIRED WORK:

1. Active Read Macbeth (link to AUDIOBOOK) and complete the WS (1415Intersession1) on the Macbeth Page of the Class Website. DUE ... BLOCK DAY THE FIRST WEEK OF SEMESTER 2.

2. Respond to prompt based on Upfront Magazine:
DUE January:26th

Read I've Been HOMELESS for Six Years (underline thesis and circle focus statement). RESPOND to the article in one of two forms:
Editorial Cartoon or COMIC ... neither computer derived
Editorial Cartoon: Create a cartoon the size of 8.5 x 11 paper. Your TONE must be evident to the viewer. Perhaps in the cartoon express WHY the problem exists or propose a solution.
ON BACK: Indicate TONE and TARGET AUDIENCE
COMIC: Fold an 1.5 x 11 inch piece (TYPO...8.5 x 11) of printer paper in half length wise (portrait) then fold in thirds to create 6 "boxes". In the six boxes create a comic strip...a superhero that finds a solution to the problem discussed in the article.
ON BACK...INDICATE TONE and TARGET AUDIENCE.
BONUS...DO BOTH.
BRING ORIGINAL and MAGAZINE to class the first day.

RUBRIC:
+_______/ 10 TONE and AUDIENCE indicated and work matches

Today in class we discussed the BNW quote on page 70 "Words can be like X-Rays..."

We discussed how Huxley's words (the novel itself or word choices) are like X-Rays and pierce us, the reader (page 70).

Papers were returned.

Today PSAT RESULTS were distributed the first few minutes of class. I passed back Papers that I finished grading. We completed and corrected WC pages 640-644 exercises 12-14-15 (evens). We discussed Brave New World...John's STRONG Religious influences.

Today in class we will complete and correct:

Vocabulary Book page 86 and WC pages 633-634 ex 2 and 3 all

Some papers will be returned

We will continue discussing BNW...Block Day it was the beginning of Ch. 17 and Mond's discussion with John about Religion. Today we will begin our discussion with a look at John...the foreshadowing of his death at the end of the novel.

BONUS...Due Friday before school...posts must be done before 7:15 AM and all must be 100 words or more with word count listed in parenthesis at end...you can get credit by using your initials and STA BLOCK # __) For Example I would use (RMM STA BLOCK 1).

If you have all regularly assigned work completed ... go back and respond to the MAUS prompts on Cross Country Connections. BEGIN with the most recent posts for Maus II and then work your way back through the 2014 school year posts that begin on 9-17 (7 posts total).

BLOCK 6: HOMEWORK...individually prepare for group discussion of: Community, Identity, Stability, and the theme of Alienation (groups divided roles)

All did what BLOCK 6 did...with a few deviations:
Block 5 did not finish VTS and did not correct Vocab p. 87

Schedule ALERT...

Monday and Tuesday next week are BLOCK DAYS.
ALL STUDENTS still have final paper/reflection due on Tuesday 12-9-14. Remember it is still 10% bonus if turned in early!

I finished binder checks in most classes...a few to finish Thursday/Friday.

We discussed FOIL in Brave New World.

We completed and corrected Vocabulary Book Choosing the Right Word (p. 75) and pages 82-83-87. What was not corrected in class today will be corrected prior to the quiz on Friday.
