After the quiz there was time in class to start the BALLAD poem assignment (link in poetry page of class website if you seem to misplace copy given out in class). You will write a BALLAD about the Holocaust and/or Holocaust Remembrance Day celebrations.

March 31st and April 1st we will finish the ESLR. If you were absent for any reason and/or need extra time...plan on staying after school (after break) Wednesday 4-14 or Thursday 4-15 or both of you were absent several days.

Writing Exam
We will spend ALL class time writing the ESLR tomorrow. Monday we will have a grammar review then finish the final copy. The grammar quiz will be Tuesday 3-30-10.
The Outside Reading report is due tomorrow as students walk into the room. If a student borrowed one of my books, it must be turned in WITH the report for the report to be considered on time.
Next Tues-Thurs we will work on POETRY and preview FRANKENSTEIN. The FRANKENSTEIN study guide will be posted next week.

Bake Sale 3-24-10
don't forget the bake sale for the Lenten drive to raise money for the orphanage is tomorrow. Bring pre-packaged homemade goodies tomorrow to the table outside student services.
Writing Exam started in class today
It is a 100% in class activity. If you miss any class days, you get the equivalent amount of time to work at lunch, before school or after school. Please make arrangements with me to make sure everything is completed before school lets out for Easter. We will work on the writing Exam (ESLR) for 5 class periods.
Wed - Fri we will do grammar activities to open class as we have a quiz on unit 11 on Monday 3-29-10.

I was not here for block 5 as I was at the junior retreat. I will miss blocks 4 and 5 tomorrow.
Today the classes turned in the final drafts of the autobiography paper. one more formal paper to go...a resume and cover letter next quarter!!
Grammar exercises were centered around comma and semicolon usage. We discussed comma rules on pages 255-257 and completed page 258. We looked at rules about semicolons on pages 259-260. Block 5 was to complete exercise 4 on page 631 (all).
Tomorrow ALL students need their grammar books and outside reading books in class. Grammar exercises will be done and there may be time to read from the outside reading book (report due Friday 3-26-10).
There will be a CAPITALIZATION QUIZ (UNIT 10) ON MONDAY 3-22-10

March 10th Holocaust Survivors to Speak ... Living History
Lou Dunst and Gussie Zaks are members of San Diego's New Life Club for Holocaust Survivors.
Lou Dunst will discuss his experiences as a survivor of the ghetto at Mateszalka and the Auschwitz, Mauthausen, and Ebensee concentration camps. Dunst arrived in San Diego in 1951, where he has been a successful merchant and real estate investor. He has been active in the San Diego community, sharing his story with various schools and community groups.
Gussie Zaks, a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen, Flossenburg, Blechhammer, Saybusch, and Neusalz concentration camps, will relay her personal story. Gussie travels throughout the San Diego community speaking to students, synagogues, and other community groups.
HOMEWORK: Please spend time thinking back over the personal stories we read last semester. The guests want to tell you their stories and want you to ask questions. Think of Five QUESTIONS you wish to have answered about their experience in the Holocaust and/or their life before or after the Holocaust.

Guest Speakers
We have guest speakers planned for Monday 3-1-10 and Wednesday 3-10-10. Assignments may be due those days, as with all great plans, one must have a plan B. If something comes up and a speaker must cancel at the last moment, we will go with plan B.
Monday 3-1-10 we have a speaker BUT the sonnet reading is due/be prepared. If the speaker must cancel/reschedule at the last moment...we will start our Poetry unit.

February comes to a close
We finished reading Macbeth aloud yesterday. The Act 5 summary and quotes WS may be completed and used on tomorrow's quiz.
You need your literature books.
We will look at Sonnets in our literature book and discuss a few of Shakespeare's sonnets. This ends our Shakespeare unit (along with Macbeth review) and starts our poetry unit. (if you are ordering Frankenstein on your own...have it by March 15th).
Monday 3-8-10 we will have a Shakespeare unit test (see the class website for themes, etc to study).

This week I will pass back the paper drafts as I get to them. We will be reading aloud Macbeth this week (an Act 5 quiz will be announced a day in advance).
Paper Revision Tips: (we will do some grammar exercises during the revision process)
all papers need a thesis
events are in past tense
use of lessons, traits, skills is in past and present tense
avoid passive voice
need transitions between paragraphs
avoid prepositions at end of paragraphs
revise to avoid unclear pronoun reference
how you use skills, lessons, values is what the paper is about (the event is the appetizer and the lessons incorporated into your life is the MAIN dish...the bulk of the paper)

The Curriculum Guide will be available on the Saints website by the end of the week. Students have until April 1st to pick classes and get necessary signatures. April 1st is the deadline to turn in BOTH the course selection (AP contract if that applies to you) and deposit to the school office.

Updates
Today we signed up for the Outside reading Biographies/Autobiographies. If you did not complete the Critical Reading exercise from the Vocabulary Book (pages 31-36) it was homework.

Influence of Shakespeare
Shakespeare's plays inspired Victorian Era painters like the members of the Pre-Raphelite Brotherhood. Millais recreated the tragedy of Orphelia being driven to madness when Hamlet murdered her father. Flowers were chosen for their symbolic meanings:

daisies = innocence
roses = youth
violets = faithfulness and early death

Act 1 ...done
We finished reading Act 1 in each class today. Tomorrow we will work in pairs to complete the Act 1 review Worksheet and start to read Act 2.
Act 3 is due Monday 2/8/10 and Act 4 on Wednesday 2/10/10. There will be a quiz.
Starting the week of Feb 22nd you will need to bring your Literature Book to class along with your Macbeth book. We'll be looking at poetry in our text.
Expect a Shakespeare Test the first week of March.

Welcome to Semester 2!
Today we cleaned out the vocabulary lessons from our binders. We kept in our binders our syllabus, literature and writing sections. Those items will be pertinent all year. ALL BOOKS, even summer reading, will be covered on the final exam in June.
We went over key dates from our syllabus and wrote them down in our planner (paper due dates, etc).
We took our first Macbeth quiz and started reading the play aloud. Those people who have a part have homework, they need to review their part so they can read with expression to better tell thew story as it was meant to be told...it is a PLAY that was to be seen and heard ... not read. Everyone will have a part!

ALL sophomores in English 2 (Both my class and Mr. Hecht's class) will be required to read Acts 1 and 2 of Macbeth during intersession. I'll post the study guide on the website during Finals Week. There will be a Macbeth quiz at the start of second semester AND with each subsequent act that we read.
Due 2-2-10 Active Read Macbeth ACTS 1 and 2 - Complete Study Guide (Typed). No Late work will be accepted. Prepare for a quiz to be given day 1.

Monday we'll take our Brave New World Essay portion of our final in class. Tuesday will be the multiple choice questions and essays that cover all books from the semester.
The final is worth 190 points. Each Multiple Choice Question (100) is worth a 1/2 a point = 50 points. The BNW essays total 60 points and the essay on Tuesday totals 80 points.

Essay Contest Final Drafts Due Tuesday 11-24-09
A few items to consider as you finalize your paper:
1. Word count of 750 words or less does NOT include World Cited Page
2. Make Works Cited Page it's OWN page
3. Make sure to cite sources/research (in text citations) for the Founding Documents (years 1760-1800) as well as Historical Figure.
4. Make sure to clearly make connections as to how the historical figure exhibited the civic value
5. Make sure to clearly state how YOU have or will try to exhibit the value...do not speak in generalities...be SPECIFIC
6. Run Spell Check
7. Read over your paper prior to printing out and turning it in to look for errors the computer does not find (the not they, etc). Sometimes we type faster or slower than the thoughts running through our head.
8. Capitalize proper nouns...yes, many did not in the drafts, WOW!
9. Watch for unclear pronoun reference, a common error.
watch for shifts in verb tense. For example...the historical figures actions happened...therefore should be in past. What you might do or might do is present or future. Stay consistent in each section.
Print out and turn in with the rough draft I wrote on and evidence of peer tutoring if you were required to attend.
Upload to turnitin.com. MAKE SURE IT IS UPLOADED AS A .DOC so i can send it in to the contest.

Someone who has NEVER read the book should REALLY KNOW SPECIFICS ABOUT THE STORY in your explaination to get a better understanding of THIS PARTICULAR PIECE OF LITERATURE. Vague answers w/o textual evidence (only topic sentence type answers) will not be given credit. PROVE YOU READ THE BOOK. IF YOU DID NOT BE HONEST AND ANSWER A DIFFERENT QUESTION OR WRITE SORRY, I NEVER READ THE BOOK IN THE SPACE PROVIDED FOR THE ANSWER.

BONUS OPPORTUNITY
Goldstar ( a discount events website) listed a speaker on the topic of the Holocaust. If you attend the event,bring in your admission ticket and I will give you an assignment to complete based upon the event. You have the opportunity to earn 15 bonus points to be applied to the Holocaust Studies unit.
The bonus points CANNOT be applied to make up for work not done, it can only be used to enhance hard work that has already been done. Bonus Points are bonus…not INSTEAD of regular assigned work. Bouns = going above and beyond.

Technical Difficulties
Block 4 presentations did NOT happen as the projector did not work. Mr. Ozdowski came to my rescue and helped out so that blocks 3 and 5 could start presentations. Tomorrow be prepared for completing the presentations.

Paper Deadlines...coming sooner than you think
The Outside Reading report is posted on the website under first semester papers. On the syllabus it says it is due Nov 4th. Some of you will have retreat that day.
THEREFORE...it will be due NOVEMBER 6TH FOR ALL students. Mark the change in your planners...and on the syllabus.
Paper #2 was posted on the website also...rough draft due date is set for October 27th. I have not shared the info with you as of this post as I got an opportunity for a writing contest for you guys. I am working on the instructions/rubric for the assignment and will post/explain early next week...the essay will require some, no alot, of research and has a word count that can not be exceeded...why not try to win 5,000.00 in an essay content and l;earn MLA format at the same time!
As of Saturday 10-17-09 at 7 pm the Essay Contest Rubric was posted to the Papers Page on the website...draft due 10-27-09 (750 words...or just a bit less). winner earns $5,000.00 - essay contest topic sent to me from the Bill of Rights Institute
The final draft will be due before Thanksgiving (Tuesday 11-24 or whenever you leave for your Thanksgiving Break)...and I must email the contest entries no later than the last day of November.

Thursday bring in a photograph of yourself (a group or portrait...just mUST be appropriate for school).
Friday the final paper draft is due. The paper must be sent to turnitin.com prior to class time and a hard copy stapled behind ALL drafts in order for the paper to be "on time". If you have not signed up for turnitin.com DO SO NOW!

Today we discussed how to register for Turnitin.com (tonight's homework). I collected the paper draft redo's and passed back all papers I had. We got in a circle and active read/discussed Management of Grief.
Tomorrow is a vocabulary quiz on lessons 8-9 (sentence structure). Wednesday a TEST on the 3 Lit Stories and a vocabulary quiz lessons 9 and 10 next Friday (9th).
For Monday 10-5-09 Bring two holocaust novels. For Thursday 10-8-09 bring a photo of yourself (alone or in a group)

If there is extra time we'll review vocabulary words for Friday's quiz...sentence format...each block will be given a list of words to use in a sentence and a topic for the sentences to follow.
I am updating grades and the blog...check for everything EXCEPT vocabulary test corrections to be updated online by 4 pm. If you see a discrepancy, please let me know!
Check your OUTSIDE READING BOOK CHOSEN GRADE...those with a ZERO MUST get a title approved by me ASAP...I do NOT accept the OR reports without having approved the book first.

Today I introduced lesson 8 vocabulary words and we went over the paragraphs on pages 94 and 95. Tomorrow we'll do the same for lesson 9.
After doing so I passed back the vocabulary test and gave students time to correct in class (homework if not done) then let students read from their OR book as I met with students about their paper drafts. (Tomorrow I have 2 people to meet with in block 5).
Block 4 students were given their copies of Survival in Auschwitz and In My Hands Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer today. Tomorrow blocks 3 and 5 will get their books.

Students turned in homework and worked on Vocabulary lessons 8 and 9 words and definitions (that quiz will be Friday...sentence format. After students did this they read their Outside Reading book. I met with students and discussed paper drafts. Some students need to resubmit a draft by 10-1-09 ... check SOTW by 4 pm today to confirm if that is you.
Final draft of the paper is due Friday 10-9-09.

Tomorrow is the vocabulary test on lessons 1-7...with an emphasis on 6 and 7. It will be Multiple Choice.
After the test, you will read from your literature book and answer questions. What is not done in class is homework:
ACTIVE READ Bharati Mukherjee's (image above) The Management of Grief in your literature book (starts on page 224). Complete the questions (typed in paragraph form)that follow the story. Answers that do NOT include textual evidence will not be graded. Always support your response!

After the quiz you are to ACTIVE read from your literature book the story by Amy Tan called A Pair of Tickets. The story commences on page 166. By Monday have read the story and completed questions 1-3 on page 181 (typed, in paragraph form and using textual evidence to support your response).

Due Wednesday: Sentence Completion Lessons 1 and 2 EVEN #'s. TYPED. Underline the portion YOU ADD. ALSO look at the class website. On home page find document attached ... Letters from Birmingham Jail by Marti Luther King Jr. Print out, read, summarize (type) and bring to class tomorrow.
During the course of the week we'll also discuss concepts from summer reading and grammar. Bring all books to class.
Monday Sept. 7th there is no school...Labor Day. Tuesday the 8th you need to have your Literature Books in class and book orders turned in with $ or a note saying no thanks.

Novels...class ones or OR...take home or donate to the classroom library
Many Many finals are graded...check online after school or stop by...more are graded than what is online as of now...I'll work on that today!
