Friday 10-30-15

Today we had short classes due to the Groundbreaking Ceremony.

After the quiz there was time to:
  • Register for Grammar Flip if that has not been done already
  • Complete WC pages 523-527 EX 11-14 EVENS and EX 3 and 4 ALL pages 531-532
  • Read the CHINA article from the OLD Upfront Magazine as well as the NEW one that was given out today...and complete the WS.

WC and Upfront due Monday if not done in class

NO SHAVE NOVEMBER Begins Monday...Prize for the block with highest participation (by percentage)

Block Days will be slightly different for each class as I will be out on Thursday and Friday.

We read, completed, and corrected WC pages 589-91 EX 10-11-12 evens

We discussed MAUS:
How does the use of frames help to convey a sense of time?

What stylistic techniques are used to move the reader between flashbacks and flash forwards?

Authenticity of Story...Vladek's dialect + ....
How do diagrams, charts, maps and photos act as documentary evidence of the Holocaust?
What do you learn from them?
Why do you think Art and Vladek include them in the narrative?
What function do they serve?

BLOCK 4 left off with:
Despite the extreme danger to life, Vladek recounts several instances of resistance that occurred under Nazi occupation and in the concentration camps. Some were small acts of personal altruism and sacrifice, others heroism on a greater scale. Resistance to injustice took many forms including the physical, psychological and spiritual. Some acts of resistance were planned, others more spontaneous.

Find examples of RESISTANCE in the TEXT.

We corrected WC exercises from Friday and discussed MAUS relating to the story within a story concept (will finish tomorrow)

Why was it done?
Gave instances of Artie and Vladek being competitive
What stylistic differences are shown in each?


Prisoner on the Hell Planet and MAUS are very different in their length and subject matter.

Which do you find more powerful or effective? Do you identify or empathize more with the characters when they are drawn as animals or as humans?

Do you think you would relate to Vladek as much had he been drawn realistically?
