Block Day 9-30 and 10-1

We corrected Vocabulary Book pages 42-45 and Turned in Maus I Reading WS.

We discussed the first VTS for the year and began to discuss MAUS:
1. Why the use of MICE for Jewish people?
2. We created a VENN DIAGRAM to compare and contrast GRAPHIC NOVELS with COMIC STRIPS
3. Block 4 got to...why is Book 1 Subtitled My Father Bleeds History

The Lottery Discussion ... give COW from story to support responses:

Today we got new seats..,

Vocabulary Story Lesson 3 was turned in and MAUS I and II were brought to class.

We completed and corrected Vocabulary Lesson 1 Synonyms and Antonyms

We discussed the paper that was distributed about 10 days ago..."How to Mark a Book (TEXT)"

We discussed strategies for ACTIVE reading to find success in English and ALL academic subjects

Homework:
1. Read directions for CATE Paper DRAFT TONIGHT...DRAFT is due Sunday 9-27...copy of draft and rubric brought to class Monday 9-28 for a peer review workshop
2. Vocabulary Quiz - 3 - on Friday
3. MAUS I Reading WS due block day next week (9/30 or 10/1 depending on your block)

We completed and corrected Vocabulary Lesson 2 SYNONYMS and WC Pages 720-721 EX 9 Odds

We discussed Cultural expectations on MEN (connecting it with conflicts in the book)
We discussed CONFLICTS in Tuesday with Morrie
We discussed Mitch and Morrie helping one another resolve some conflicts

Block Days 9-9 and 9-10, 2015

Today in class we shared Summer Reading projects and completed and corrected Vocabulary Book Lesson 1 Choosing the Right Word.

REMEMBER: Quiz Friday - Multiple Choice - Definitions, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Filling in the Blanks

After we discussed the Character Chart and how to provide THOROUGH textual evidence to support a response.

We also discussed Mitch Albom's use of flashbacks:
Why he may have used them
What they provide the reader
Why they are in italics vs normal font for the "real time" text


Block 4 was given the conflict chart but did not work on it
Block 4 did not get to How to Mark a Book

Block 6 - same as block 4

Blocks 3 we got as far as blocks 4 and 6

Block 5: - same as 4-6-3 PLUS had a discussion on cultural expectations of men in relationship to the CHARACTER MITCH

We went through the directions for the Where I am From Poem due Block Day and while students worked on the pre-write/draft, I collected supplies.
